![]() SQL Server Express Edition is often packaged as part of a third-party application. I opened SQL Configuration Manager and the Instance was showing there, so I thought I’d try logging in to SQL Server see if everything was OK. Not just nothing to be upgraded, no Instances of SQL Server were showing. Having logged onto the Server in question and run the Service Pack installer, I was told that there were no SQL Server Instances to be upgraded. I faced such an issue last week with a Server running SQL Server Express Edition. These need to be investigated and patches need to be applied manually. They just remain on your “to be patched” list. Sometimes scheduled Patches just don’t happen – for no real reason. ![]() ![]() where applications or users need to be managed or when dealing with High Availability situations where you want to patch Nodes one at a time. Some patching needs to be done manually – e.g. Where possible, tools such as Ivanti HEAT can be used to deliver and install patches, but this doesn’t always work. So developers planning on targeting that edition need to be extra careful that they don’t accidentally introduce an Enterprise-only feature into their codebase.Patching a large SQL Server estate can be a big job. There is a downside to this however- there is no developer equivalent to the less expensive SQL Server 2016 Standard edition. This allows developers to experiment with Clustered Columnstore, Memory Optimized Tables, and other advanced features. However, it does have the advantage of including all of the SQL Server Enterprise features. Unlike SQL Server Express, it cannot be used in production environments. ![]() SQL Server 2016 Developer edition differs from their other free offering, SQL Server Express, in two ways. Also included are various Azure products, Microsoft R Server, and free training from a variety of vendors. The Visual Studio Dev Essentials program, which is also free, is the channel through which Visual Studio Community and Visual Studio Code are offered. ![]() In order to take advantage of this offer, you will need to be a member of Microsoft’s Visual Studio Dev Essentials program. In conjunction with the release of SQL Server 2016, Microsoft has announced that the Developer Edition of SQL Server will be free. ![]()
